Desmond (Des) de Beer


Des de Beer spent the first part of his career in the banking industry first with Barclays Bank in South Africa and later with Syfrets which was merged into Nedcor Investment Bank (NIB). He was appointed General Manager Corporate Equity and served on the banks executive committee. He has served on the boards of a number of listed property companies and he is currently a director of New Europe Property Investments Plc and chairs its investment committee.


Jason Buhrs

Jason started his career in the UK in 2001 working as a project surveyor. He has worked as a Project Manager for a commercial development company in Johannesburg as well as Contracts Manager for various large construction companies in South Africa. Jason joined the Resilient Group in 2010 and has focused on Resilient Africa since 2012.

Eddie Mc Donald

Eddie started his career at Barclays Bank in 1982 and later moved on to Syfrets and Nedcor Investment Bank. He joined Imperial Bank in 2003 and was transferred to Kwa-Zulu Natal as the Regional Manager of their Property Finance Division. In 2009 Imperial Bank was purchased by Nedbank and Eddie decided to pursue his own interests as a consultant in the Retail Property Industry, he joined the Resilient Africa Team in May 2014 and is currently based in Lagos, Nigeria.

In 2008 Justin completed his articles with FirstRand Bank Limited where after he joined RMB Real Estate Investment Banking as a deal maker for 5 years focusing on debt funding of various structured property transactions. Justin joined Resilient Africa in September 2013.

Kobus van Biljon

Kobus commenced his career with KPMG in Johannesburg, completed his articles in 2003 and focused on the banking and real estate sectors. In 2006 he was transferred to KPMG in New York City, where he spent several years as a consultant to real estate and private equity asset management firms. He joined Rockcastle in 2014, initially working on Zambian and other investments outside of South Africa. In March of 2015 he joined the Resilient Africa team in Lagos, Nigeria.

Philip van der Merwe

Philip van der Merwe has been with the Shoprite Group for over 25 years and is responsible for managing and developing the Group Property Portfolio as well as the leasing and roll-out program of new stores. The Group’s activities are spread over 18 countries and 1 000 trading outlets under the brands of Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, U-Save, Hungry Lion, OK Foods and House & Home.



Matthew Cheney

Matthew has been working for Resilient Africa since November 2013 where he has been actively involved in Resilient Africa’s developments in Nigeria. Matthew previously worked for a construction company as the site quantity surveyor on a retail development as well as a short stint at a Professional Quantity Surveyor firm before joining Resilient Africa.


Merwe de Jager

Merwe started his construction management career in 2001 in the Western Cape and has worked for various large construction companies as Construction Manager and Contracts Manager. After working in Nigeria as Project Manager since 2013, he joined the Resilient Africa team in 2015.

Donovan de Lange

Donovan has been involved with the property management of the Resilient Group buildings since 2009 while with Broll and JHI, and specialises in rural and commuter markets across SA. He joined Resilient in September 2015 to further establish the Group in rural SA and Nigeria.


Tersia McDonald

Administrative Officer

Tersia is a qualified DTP operator with 21 years’ experience, during which time she managed her own business. After becoming a mom she became a home executive and committed herself to raising her 3 children. She recently decided to enter the market again and joined the Resilient Africa team in Lagos, Nigeria in June 2015.


Bolarinwa Agbola

Bolarinwa commenced his career with KPMG Professional Services Lagos in 2009, participating and leading teams that provided audit and assurance services to leading financial institutions in Nigeria. He is also a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. He joined the Resilient Africa team in July 2016.
